How to read your bill
Knowing how to read your electrical bill is a good way to monitor your electricity usage and see how conservation efforts can reduce your expenses. For information on ways to pay, see Payment Options.
Please see below for a brief explanation of the items on your bill.
Electrical Bill Items
Your Account Number is a unique number that identifies your account with Eastern Ontario Power.
The Amount Due is your amount payable on this bill.
The Statement Date is the day that Eastern Ontario Power produced your bill.
The Due Date is the day that your payment is due.
When electricity is delivered over a power line, it is normal for a small amount of power to be consumed or lost as heat. Equipment, such as wires and transformers, consumes power before it gets to your home or business. The Adjustment Factor accounts for these losses.
Metered Quantity is the amount of kWh’s used from the previous meter reading to the present meter reading.
Billed Quantity is the amount of kWh’s used from the previous meter reading to the present meter reading multiplied by the Adjustment Factor.
“Time-of-Use electricity pricing is a way of adjusting the cost of electricity based upon demand. With TOU pricing there are three cost periods each weekday referred to as “Off-peak,” “Mid-peak,” and “On-peak” periods. Weekends and holidays are always Off-peak periods. Rates are subject to change by the OEB twice a year (May 01 and Nov 01).”
These are the costs for delivering electricity from generation stations across the province to EOP then to your home or business. This includes the costs to build and maintain the transmission and distribution lines, towers and poles and operate provincial and local electricity systems.
Regulatory Charges are the costs of administering the wholesale electricity system, maintaining the reliability of the provincial grid and the costs associated with funding Ministry of Energy and infrastructure conservation and renewable energy programs.
The Debt Retirement Charge pays down the debt of the former Ontario Hydro.
The Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) is a charge of 13% in accordance with the Province of Ontario’s tax system.
